Releasing warm sewage effluent into the West Credit River\u2019s\u00a0coldwater\u00a0habitat could have adverse effects on this temperature-sensitive Brook Trout population.<br><br>The West Credit River\u00a0(WCR)\u00a0has one of the few remaining self-sustaining populations of this native Brook Trout species in southern Ontario.<br><br>At full build-out, 7.2 million litres per day of effluent will be discharged into the WCR\u00a0at Peel Region\u2019s Caledon border\u00a0and\u00a0flow into the\u00a0Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Reserve.<br><br>The Coalition for the West Credit River is a community of organizations (Belfountain Community Organization, Freshwater Conservation Canada, the Izaak Walton Flyfishing Club, Ontario Rivers Alliance, and Ontario Streams) collaboratively working to address issues surrounding the Erin Water Resource Recovery Facility, the health of the WCRand its native Brook Trout population.\u00a0<br><br>The Coalition adopts a collaborative, science-based approach to protecting the WCR\u2019s aquatic ecosystem and works to ensure that treated sewage\u00a0effluent complies with environmental legislation, and any impacts are effectively addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"http:\/\/nebn.davidbeyer.ca\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BT-Buddies-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4940\" srcset=\"https:\/\/nebnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BT-Buddies-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/nebnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BT-Buddies-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/nebnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BT-Buddies-18x10.jpg 18w, https:\/\/nebnetwork.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/BT-Buddies.jpg 1121w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">To survive and thrive\u00a0Brook Trout\u00a0require clean cold water.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Coalition for the West Credit River Accomplishments&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since 2020, the Coalition for the West Credit River has worked to protect one of the few remaining native Brook Trout populations in southern Ontario from the proposed Erin Wastewater Treatment Facility.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brook Trout are a sensitive&nbsp;coldwater&nbsp;species that are intolerant of stream temperatures greater than 19\u00b0C for any sustained period, and yet the Environmental Study Report failed to include any provision for an effluent temperature limit or an effluent cooling system.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Over the past 5 years, the Coalition has achieved the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;Built strong working relationships with the Ministry of Environment, Conservation and Parks (MECP), the Town of Erin, Credit Valley Conservation, and the Region of Peel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;Done the field-work to collect five years of sewage-effluent temperature data (June-October) from local wastewater treatment facilities to demonstrate potential impacts on stream temperature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2022&nbsp;Used this evidence, together with sustained advocacy, to secure key protections in the facility\u2019s Environmental Compliance Approval (ECA), including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>o&nbsp;Final effluent must be maintained at or below 19\u00b0C on a 4-day moving average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>o&nbsp;An Effluent Cooling System must be built into the design and fully operational before the plant can go online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>o&nbsp;Quarterly summaries of all operating issues and corrective actions must be posted to the Town of Erin\u2019s website.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>o&nbsp;Real-time water quality and effluent temperature data must also be posted to the Town\u2019s website for public access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Outreach &amp; Education<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond regulatory advocacy, the Coalition is deeply committed to education and stewardship.
