As a hub for applied learning, research<\/span>,<\/span> and innovation in the region, Niagara College is a proud <\/span>partner in<\/span> the Niagara Escarpment Biosphere Network. Our Daniel J. Patterson Campus in Niagara-on-the-Lake sits on 125 acres at the foot of the <\/span>escarpment<\/span> \u2014<\/span> Canada\u2019s first nationally recognized post-secondary wildlife sanctuary <\/span>and one of <\/span>the country\u2019s<\/span> most unique learning environments.<\/span><\/p>\n

Rich with nature\u2019s abundance, w<\/span>e have the good fortune to live in <\/span>this amazing place<\/span> on the traditional territory of the Haudenosaunee and Anishinaab<\/span>ek<\/span> peoples<\/span>.<\/span> Our distinct ecological and geographic location makes our campus <\/span>\u2014<\/span> a UNESCO-designated World Biosphere Reserve and <\/span>living laboratory<\/span> \u2014<\/span> the ideal place for students to experience <\/span>what<\/span> makes this region so special.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our <\/span>15 acres of <\/span>restored wetlands<\/span> provide<\/span> an outdoor classroom<\/span> for numerous student projects and initiatives. Students in our environmental programs are monitoring <\/span>migratory bird patterns to help scientists understand the effects of climate change. In our <\/span>network of <\/span>campus garde<\/span>ns<\/span>, which includes <\/span>a pollinator garden, seed garden, chef garden, Indigenous garden<\/span>,<\/span> vineyard, <\/span>and hopyard<\/span>, students<\/span> work with<\/span> our fruitful soil <\/span>first-<\/span>hand<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

With education central to the protection of our biosphere, Niagara College is a learning place for sustainable development. On our grounds, local solutions to protect and restore nature are tried and tested to meet global challenges. <\/span>As a place of higher learning, Niagara College is committed to <\/span>being both<\/span> dutiful <\/span>stewards <\/span>of<\/span> the environment we inhabit<\/span> and educators of the next generation of<\/span> changemakers<\/span> and activists. <\/span><\/p>\n

This choice of words <\/span>\u2014<\/span> changemakers and activists <\/span>\u2014<\/span> is<\/span> deliberate, as the problems we face today <\/span>require more than environmental conscientiousness. Changemakers<\/span>,<\/span> armed with <\/span>knowledge and innovative<\/span> solutions<\/span>,<\/span> are needed now more than ever as the climate change crisis threatens biodiversity<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

We see and feel it happening all around us<\/span>: r<\/span>ecord-breaking temperatures, ice melting, water<\/span>rising, and <\/span>volatile weather. <\/span>The impacts are felt<\/span> locally<\/span> as <\/span>Niagara\u2019s climate becomes warmer, wetter<\/span>,<\/span> and more intense. <\/span>Look no further than <\/span>challenges facing <\/span>our<\/span> wine and agriculture industries.<\/span><\/p>\n

It will take a tremendous collective effort <\/span>\u2014<\/span> like that of our biosphere network <\/span>\u2014<\/span> to <\/span>reverse this environmental domino effect<\/span>.<\/span> The decisions we make locally impact us here in Niagara and beyond<\/span>. <\/span>I<\/span>t<\/span> is our belief at <\/span>Niagara<\/span> College that e<\/span>ducation <\/span>will <\/span>help <\/span>chart the course towards a<\/span>more sustainable world<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

It fills me with great pride to see our graduates making a difference<\/span> in their industries<\/span>, <\/span>and<\/span> o<\/span>ur <\/span>students, faculty<\/span>,<\/span> and staff <\/span>bring<\/span>ing<\/span> their learning to the community to <\/span>inspire<\/span> change. Our <\/span>Bioblitz events are a shining example<\/span>, <\/span>where<\/span> community members join <\/span>in <\/span>our efforts to monitor biodiversity<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Our leadership follows suit, with sustainability top of mind <\/span>for all decisions<\/span> and codified in our 2022-27 Strategic Plan<\/span>. Alongside our partners across the network who share responsibility for the health of our biosphere, we will continue to act for the betterment of our communities and the environment.<\/span><\/p>\n
